Mk 15:42-47 > Mark 15:42
| 42 | 43 | 44 | 45 | 46 | 47 | Mk 15:42a ... And already having become "late afternoon" ...The Greek word op'-see-os means "a time late in the day, from the 9th to the 12th hour, from three to six o'clock p.m."
Mk 15:42b ... since it was "the preparation" ...The Greek word for "preparation" is paraskeue (par-ask-yoo-ay). To this day in Greece it is still the name for Friday. Since the Torah says one cannot light a fire or cook on the sabbath, the meals are prepared the day before. This is why the Hebrews gathered two days of manna in the wilderness on the day before Sabbath.
Mk 15:42c ... which is "sabbath eve."
The Greek word for "sabbath-eve" is prosabbaton (pros-ab'-bat-on), a compound word from the preposition pros, meaning "before" and sabbaton, meaning "Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath." Therefore, "prosabbaton" is another name for Friday. Another Gospel states that "it was the Day of Preparation ... for that Sabbath was a High Day." This means that Saturday was a double sabbath because it was also the first day of the Feast of Unraised Bread. Mk 15:41 < Verses > 15:43 |
